Shelley,
The commuter I started at in 1984 was non-union!!!! I helped organize The Machinists on the property in 1990!! After that then are pay started to increase some. So as I stated before, don't ASSUME!!! It makes an A$$ of you not me!!!
I'm glad you did your time in the military and I respect that!! Don't insult me, because I didn't serve in the military!! Yes I do have an A&P and I've had it since 1983. I stopped using mine when I got hired at Lockheed in 2003, because they are a manufacturer and don't require one!!! I believe it is you that needs to quit the whining!!!! If you would research some of the current contracts you would know what I say to be true!! Especially right after 9/11 their pay was slashed drastically!! Since then, seven years later their pay has increased back some. Have you ever been in the airlines??? I have experience on numerous Airframes, engines and avionics suites. Apparently you have only specialized in engines. Hence that may be why you are not as marketable to the airlines due to the fact you have no airframe or avionics time.
Shelley,
Before you rant and rave about what I do or don't do, why don't you ask me first. First off, I wasn't a crew chief who memorized their A&P test, because they got their DD214 signed off by the FAA to take the test!!! I did not serve in the military. However, I do know the type you are talking about and most of them can't wrench their way out of a paperbag!
Second, I went to two years of A&P school in Tulsa, OK. I started out in my field at $6.50/hr and worked my way up from there in the commuter airlines. I spent the next 15 years in the commuters and reached the mighty sum of $19.00/ hr. plus meager benefits. I do know what it's like trying to get on with the majors it took me 15 years!!! In the late 1990's the majors started hiring and I got on with USAIR. I worked their 3 years and then 9/11 hit. I believe at the time I was making around $23 to $24/hr.
After 9/11 and two bankruptcies, USAIRS top pay was cut to $21/hr. from about $30/hr. Currently at Lockheed we are making much more than the airline mechs due to the airline contracts being stripped in bankruptcy court. So, right now as a machinist at Lockheed I am doing much better than the majority of my Machinist brothers at the airlines and yes I am fortunate and blessed. My current pay is $27/hr plus benefits and the top off in my classification currently is $32/hr which will take me about ten years to reach!! So don't assume anything, because it makes an ass of U not me!!!!
